The Disconnect
We all know it: our bodies thrive in nature’s embrace. But here’s a reality check : Our daily grind often chains us indoors, eyes glued to screens, missing out on the natural harmony we need and crave. It’s a modern-day tango disrupting our well-being, leaving most of us feeling less than our best and, for many, chronically ill and in pain.
In a way, living out of nature’s embrace is like a fish out of water!
Breaking Free from Chronic Pain
I’m Julia, and I’ve overcome two decades of chronic pain, fatigue, and illness. My health struggles began at 16 with glandular fever, leaving me perpetually exhausted. At 18, while jogging my favourite coastal path (Bondi Beach to Coogee), I felt overwhelmed by sudden weakness, fatigue, dizziness, and flu-like symptoms. My legs almost gave way, and I nearly collapsed. Stumbling to the main road, hands on my knees, I hailed a bus out of service. The driver took one look at me, hit the brakes, and drove me right to my doorstep, insisting that I seek medical attention.
Although my acute symptoms went away with rest, I never fully recovered. I always felt a little ill. Diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), I faced many years of relapses, severe fatigue, and pain that made even my commute to work a challenge.
Have you ever felt that ageing has compressed you into a less vibrant version of yourself?
Do you have less zest for life and freedom of mobility?
Or are you struggling to enjoy the physical activities you once loved?
That was me. By my early 30s, I felt like a young woman trapped in an older woman’s body, forced to give up activities I loved due to debilitating pain. Despite my efforts, each year seemed to worsen until, in my late 30s, I made significant progress by addressing emotional wounds that contributed to my health issues. However, the pain continued to come and go unpredictably.
This persistent pain led me to discover the foundations of health, integrating nature into daily life, and adopting habits that transformed my well-being. As a result, I’m dedicated to helping others achieve pain-free living and optimal health.
The Turning Point
About five years ago, a wise man imparted an insight that changed my life overnight. He explained that people rely on two main types of healing: conventional medical systems and alternative preventive methods, usually mixing both based on the severity of their condition. But there are other paths to health; relying solely on this has failed us miserably.
(Obviously, hey?! We’re facing a global illness epidemic!)
The Health Hierarchy
Real health, he said, should be viewed as a pyramid. At the top is conventional medicine, used sparingly for life-threatening situations. Below is preventive care, which is to be accessed more frequently. The base is what he called “Foundational Health.” This requires no practitioners or medicines, just you — and it’s where you invest most of your time and energy to yield the BEST results!
If you nurture your foundation, you can avoid costly and risky interventions higher up the pyramid. You may also prevent your health from getting worse, and what’s more exciting? You may also get your health back!
What might Foundational Health be? Here are a few hints:
It’s abundant.
It’s free.
It’s accessible to everyone!
Rediscovering the Basics: Healthy Habits
Imagine developing daily habits that prevent future illness and pain and help you achieve optimal health, so you can age with ease and grace. Enter Foundational Health — the unsung hero in our health saga — an underrated gem that doesn’t cost a thing! It will, however, ask you to change your habits.
Many of the foundational health daily habits were familiar to me, and I had adopted some to a degree. But, I needed the BIG WHY to drive meaningful change and fully integrate them into my life—that day marked a turning point for me.
I used to follow a daily mental checklist: 20 minutes of grounding and sunlight, computer/stretch breaks outside, healthy meals, a daily swim and stroll, a weekly yoga class, and a weekend hike in nature. These were all fantastic activities, but I treated them as isolated tasks. Once completed, I would return to my indoor comforts, not realising that I was severely lacking in my connection with nature. I had yet to integrate nature into my everyday life and activities.
My daily habits needed to change to build a strong foundation for my health.
What is Foundational Health?
Foundational Health is establishing daily habits that enable your body to function at its best and sustain optimal health. I say ‘daily habits’ because our lifestyle has adopted many unhealthy ones, but essentially, it’s going back to basics, and you need to change your habits to achieve this!
A BIG part of this is integrating nature into every aspect of life. Instead of just occasional outdoor activities, it’s about making nature a constant presence — whether you’re reading, eating, working, or even sleeping!
While it’s great to have a comfortable home or workplace (no one wants to be left totally to the elements!), we have overdone it. We must drastically reconnect with nature and balance “comfort” versus healing.
A great question to ask yourself is this: How many hours per day do you spend indoors, in your home, at work, in a car, in public transport, in a shopping centre, etc.? The remaining 24 hours are the time you spend outside of your natural ecosystem, the place responsible for maintaining your state of health!
Bringing Back Nature
Here’s my top 15 habits on how you can rewrite your daily script with nature’s free healthcare:
☀️ Start or end your day with sunsets or sunrises to nourish your cells and sync your rhythms
🌄 Maximise outdoor time — eat, work, read, and live outside whenever possible!
🌊 Take a refreshing ocean or freshwater swim for cold therapy, cleansing, exposure to good bacteria and minerals
🔥Embrace natural light — more sunshine, stars and fires
🚶♂️ Move your body! Enjoy beach, lakeside or bush walks/rides/runs to unwind and connect with nature’s serenity
💨 Breathe life into your body with mindful diaphragmatic breathwork
👣 Ground yourself regularly by feeling the earth beneath your feet, especially first thing in the morning and during tech breaks throughout the day
🌬 Fill your space with fresh air by keeping those windows wide open
🥗 Eat REAL local food from nature. Clean, healthy, nutrient-dense, unprocessed, wholesome foods
💧 Hydrate with live foods and spring water
🧴 Choose ALL natural, chemical-free products for your home & body, including natural clothing fibres!
☠ ️Watch what you consume, steer clear of toxins and poisons
🌙 Avoid artificial light and cut down on screens after the sun takes its bow to support your circadian rhythms (this is BIG, as our cells heal and repair during deep sleep!)
🍽 Opt for early dinners to give your digestion a head start before bed
🛌 Hit the hay early for optimal cell repair while you sleep; under the stars occasionally is a great touch!
Start Small
Quite a list, hey?! My tip is to pick one habit first. I began by getting up early to watch the sunrise at the beach. I soon found myself walking on the seashore, grounding my bare feet and taking a dip in the ocean — ticking quite a few foundational boxes at once, all before breakfast!
What habit am I tackling lately? I am working outside more than inside. As I type this, I’m sitting at my outdoor table, with the garden as my backdrop, soaking in fresh air, natural aromas, and the lively buzz of beneficial bacteria — my dog by my side, adding his unique charm to the mix!
Of course, your outdoor activities will depend on your climate and the time of year, but be creative. And prepare to get uncomfortable after so many years of indulging in excessive “comfort”—because your health depends on it!
By making these changes, you can synchronise with nature’s rhythm and unleash your inner vitality. Comment below with your thoughts on what foundational health means to you and the next habit that you wish to start adopting for optimal health and well-being.
